Maize response to potassium fertilizer at Mardan [Pakistan]

A field experiment was conducted at Jamra Farm Mardan during kharif 1991 on the soil which have relatively low reserves of K and may not be able to supply adequate K for intensive maize production. The data collected during this study showed that the potassium application affected the yield and yield components of maize i.e. dry matter yield, stover yield, and 1000 grain weight significantly except number of cobs plot-1. Maximum grain yield of 2264 kg ha-1 was noted in the treatment receiving 120 kg K2O ha-1 along with 120 kg N and 90 kg P2O5 ha-1 as basal dose. However, maximum value cost ratio of 3.1 with MRR value of 3.18 were recorded from the treatment receiving 40 kg K2O along with 120 kg N and 90 kg P2O5 ha-1. Potash concentration of soil at silking stage and at harvest was significantly increased due to potassium application. Concentration of potassium in soil at sowing stage and in leaf at silking stage was increased non-significantly. Critical level of potassium in soil at silking stage was found as 80 mg kg-1.
