Selection of potato cultivars with glandular trichomes for the lowland tropics

Glandular trichomes (GT) of potato has a protection role against pests including spider mites, thrips, and leafhopper which are common pests in the lowland tropics. GT are of types A and B, commonly found in three wild tuber-bearing Solanum species. Type A has a short stalk encapsulated with a 4 lobed head. Type B is a simple multicellular hair with a small lobule of viscous material at the top. In general, type A is known to have the property to protect against large insects, but type B only against small pests. In 1994, out of 1,197 potato clones and 52 true seed families (TSF) evaluated, 151 clones and several TSF had high density and adaptation. In 1995, clones were further evaluated and selected for adaptation. Twenty-five clones with GT genetic background including three resistant to mites are now available as pathogen tested in vitro plantlets. It was speculated that a potato cultivars with GT is advantageous in the short season lowland tropics as it appears that GT delays progress of thrips infestation
