Comparison of four crop models in different rice environments

The aim of the study was to compare the use of currently available crop simulation models namely, the CERES-Rice, ORYZA 1, SIMRIW, and TRYM, in contrasting environments. The models were run under the yield potential level using actual weather data and planting dates in a tropical environment at IRRI, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines and in temperate or subtropical environments at Yangco Agricultural Research Institute in Australia and at Kyoto University in Japan. The results were compared against the actual data of experiments conducted in these environments. Yield potential in these sites ranged from 5.7 to 14.7 t/ha. The ranges of total biomass and grain yields in each environment were simulated closely by the models. The difference between the simulated and actual grain yield ranged from 0.5 to 25.8 percent. The leaf area index (LAI) was simulated less accurately by the models except for ORYZA 1 which simulates LAI based on leaf biomass accumulation. SIMRIW underestimated the high LAI in Yangco because it specified a maximum LAI of 5 in the model. TYRM gave LAI values above 14 because it assumed high amounts of N and simulates LAI as a function of N uptake. Overestimates of LAI were not reflected on biomass and grain yields because LAI above 5 does not result in additional light absorption in the model. The average incoming radiation during the crop duration ranged from 29.8 to 45.5 MJ/sq m/day and the mean temperature ranged from 22.1 to 27.9 deg C across the four environments. The results suggest that the yield potential difference in these sites were due mainly to the environmental and less to the genetic differences. The current model showed the ability to estimate yield potential in a wide range of rice growing environment
