Biochemical characteristics of winter-grown sweetpotato in the Red River Delta [Vietnam]

The chemical composition of 28 sweetpotato genotypes grown during the winter period in the Red River Delta (RRD) was determined. Marked varietal differences were found on dry matter (DM), starch, sugar, minerals, and carotene. DM and starch appeared to be lower in the winter-grown sweetpotato than the spring-summer crop and inversely correlated with total sugar content. Application of plant growth regulators, NAA and CCC [2-chloroethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride] 35 DAP [days after planting] onwards significantly improved yield. Storage of roots under simple and naturally ventilated conditions decreased starch content and carotene level. Great varietal variability in DM and the high seasonal correlation of this trait suggests that selection for improved DM under winter growing conditions may be possible
