Low cost biomass chopper

A feederless, flywheel-type, inclined-axis chopper for forage, straw and other farm residues has been developed, the prototype is belt driven by a 4KW engine and uses four angled blades rotating below a fixed counteredge. Convenience in manual feeding is assurred by an inclined sprout and sunction created by the rotating blades. Length of chop set at 25 cm is partly regulated by the distance between the rotating blades and the floor of the housing. Blade and counteredge are both riversible. Tests with napier grass, corn stalks, and rice straw showed satisfactory performance within the appropriate clearance speed and moisture content of the material presented. Highest capacities of 1186, 1148 and 744 kg/hr were measured for napier grass, corn stalks and rice straw, respectively. The length of the chop for napier grass and corn stalks was about 60 percent within 50 mm. The unit costs about P5,000.00 without the engine, about 66 to 80 percent less than imported choppers
