Changes of cation exchange capacity and of its strong and weak acidic parts were studied for minerals and soils before and after the deposition of humic compounds during the humification process of oak leaves. Humus decreased the exchange capacity of montmorillonite and of montmorillonitic soil, and increased the exchange capacity of kaolinite and kaolinitic soil. In the case of montmorillonite, the blocking of basal surface charge by organic molecules entering interlayer spacings is possible
