By the statistical correlations between some physical and mineralogical parameters the influence of the clay fraction and its principal components on some physical and hydrophysical indices of 7 vertsols and 3 Reddish brown forest soils with vertic character, is presented. An increase of the soil smectite content determines an increase of the bulk density, compaction degree, inactive porosity concomitantly with a decrease of the total porosity, air porosity and effective porosity. The established linear relationship between soil smectite content and the hydrophysical indices are direct in the case of hygroscopic and wilting coefficients and inverse in the case of field capacity, available moisture holding capacity and maxim water-holding capacity. The obtained results demonstrate the utility of mineralogical data for the origin specification of clay influence on the physical and hydrophysical soil indices and for the hierarchy specification of clay components from this influence point of view.
