Preliminary results concerning copper pollution on brown-reddish and chestnut soils

The diminution of Cu toxicity caused by calcium amendment was studied in the green-house, on an A-horizon sub-layer of brown-reddish soil from Peris (loamy-dusty soil; pH 5.9; humus 1.8; total N 0.120; total P 0.08; total Cu 21 ppm) and of chestnut soil from Ostrov (loamy; pH 8.2; humus 2.0 per cent; total N 0.116 per cent; total P 0.06 per cent; total Cu 45 ppm), experimentally charged with Cu (500; 650; 800; 950 ppm Cu). Soil charged with Cu diminished the phytomass for beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, Savi) up to 86.7 per cen on brown-reddish soil and up to 68.2 per cent on chestnut soil. Calcium carbonate amendment of brown-reddish soil reduced the phytomass diminutions with approximately 49.6 per cent and the noxious effect of Cu. Cu bioaccumulation increased in the test-plants, starting with the first level of soil charge, the process being more intense for the brown-reddish soil (the correlation coefficients had values among r = 0.758 and r = 0.949). The increase of Cu concentration caused modifications - both quantitative and qualitative ones - of the bacteria and micromicetes in soil. The calcium carbonate amendament of brown-reddish soil determined - starting with 650 ppm added Cu - an increase of the bacteria number starting with 550 ppm added Cu and a diminution of the micromicetes number (as compared to the not amended treatments).
