Cuc, A. (S.C. ROMSUINTEST S.A., Peris (Romania))
The investigation concerning prediction possibilities of the sire availability to determine the greatest meat quantity per sow and year, were completed by establishing a selection criteria useful for the swine populations reared in our country, respectively the litter weight at 91 days. The trial was carried out on 678 litters with 6236 progeny belonging to 50 sires, and estimated the breeding sires value after three criteria like : reproduction ability (number of born alive), survival percentage at 91 days and growth potential at 91 days which pointed out the differences existing between sires for the analyzed traits. Similar results were obtained in Germany too, where the selection of litter weight at 95 days determined a genetic gain for litter weight of + 18.3 Kg and an average of + 0.48 piglets per sow at the mentioned age. Our results, together with those obtained in Germany, allow to foresee the possibility of using litter weight at 91 days as a selection criteria.
