Selection indices and genetic advance in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) [Sudan]
1993

Twenty five accessions of faba bean (V.faba L.) were evaluated over two years (1988/89-1989/90) in a 5X5 partially balanced lattice design. Data on four characters namely number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod,100-seed weight and grain yield/plant, were collected. Then different selection indices were constructed using different combinations of these characters. The selection indices based on individual traits gave the lowest expected genetic advances and relative effeciencies. The efficiency was increased when the indices included two, three and four characters, at a time. However, the index based on number of seeds/pod, 100-seed weight and grain yield per plant was only slightly less efficient than the index including the four trails. Indices involving number of pods/plant and number of seeds/pot showed relatively low efficiency compared with indices of the same order involving 100-seed weight and grain yield/plant. Generally, it could be concluded that the more inclusive the selection is the more its efficiency will be.
