Correlations between ultrasonic measurements on live pigs and carcass meatiness

Investigations of correlations between ultrasonic measurements on live swine during fattening and the carcass meat percentage at the end of fattening were carried out on 16 gilts and 15 boars of the Swedish Landrace. Measurements of the backfat thickness and MLD areas at HGP and P2 locations were taken with a scanner, type 480 ET, at two week intervals from the first to the 90-th day of fattening. Daily gains and carcass meat percentages were significantly higher in boars as compared to the gilts (793:740 g,i.e. 58.77 : 56.08%). Correlation coefficients between ultrasonic measurements of backfat thickness at HGP location on pigs from 30 to 100 kg and carcass meat percentage at the end of fattening, ranged from -0.42 to -0.79, whereas at P2 location from -0.27 to -0.63 for both sexes. Correlations between the MLD area at HGP and P2 location and the carcass meat percentage were lower, i.e r 0.18 to r = 0.52 at HGP position and r = 0.14 to r = 0.45 at P2 position for both sexes together.
