The influence of utilization and the changes of nitrogen content in eutrophisated soil on the retreat of Rumex obtusifolius

Over 1988-1991 the influence of utilization and changes of nitrogen and potassium levels in soil for the retreat of Rumex obtusifolius in Rumicetum obtusifolii association at the altitude of 600 m above sea level were observed. The utilization of the stand exhausted soil nitrogen and potassium in the eutrophisated stand, decreased organic matter content and widened the C:N ratio. By the change of stand conditions, the percentage of Rumex in the cover was reduced from 30.02 to 5.08 %. Forming a dense sod, Poa trivialis acquired dominance after Rumex retreat and prevented the germination of R-strategist seeds. By cutting before green diaspore formation during vegetation further dissemination and weed infestation were restricted. Quality of above-ground biomass was improved by species diversity increase. Feeding value increased by more than 70 % during the investigated period. The values for meadows rose from 36.90 to 68.54 points and for pastures from 43.06 to 70.13 points. In this way, semi-cultural grass cover was created from the original ruderal one. Further improving of the cover is possible by non-tillage reseeding of appropriate species into the grass sod
