Insect damage to acorns in Slovakia

An investigation of acorn-damaging insect pests in Slovakia was carried out from 1992-1994. The total number of fruits analysed was 15,482: 10,248 acorns from durmast oak (Quercus petrea), 2,926 acorns from English oak (Quercus robur) and 2,308 acorns from southern red oak (Quercus rubra). Six insect species were found to damage acorns. They were: the acorn weevil, Balaninus glandium, two leaf-roller moths, Cydia splendana and Cydia amplanta, two cynipids, Andricus caputcalisis and Callirhytis glandium, and the hornet, Vespa crabro. Larvae of b. glandium and C. splendana were the most harmful, damaging on average 21.38 % and 5.40 % of acorns of the three oak species studied, respectively. Acorns of durmast oak were attacked significantly more (36.87 % on average) than those of English oak (19.9 %) and southern red oak (5.64 %)
