Comparison of the food quality foraged by free ranging roe and red deer

Our research area is 3641 ha of hunting ground Sitno (2142 ha forests and 1499 ha fields) with Sitno peak the highest at 1010 m. The land is flat or slightly wavy. 21.3 % of trees are conifers (the most abundant species Scots Pine) and 78.7 % are broadleaves with oak and beech most abundant. The samples were collected during both hunting and closed seasons in 1991 and 1992. 57 roe deer (43 bucks and 14 does) and 59 red deer (33 stags and 26 hinds) were shot. About 700 to 1000 ml of stomach contents were collected and stored at -18 deg C. The samples were unwashed and were processed in Agrostav Liptovsky Hradok according to the state standard CSN 46 7093. The content of crude protein; fat; ash; fiber; digestible protein; nitrogen free content; starch units; P; Ca; Ca:P; K; Na; Mg; and S in dry matter; beta-caroten in ng. per kg of fresh weight was analysed. The analysis of variance (GLM) was used for processing the data for all nutrients. Age classes nested in species, interaction of S2 and species and interaction of S4 and species were used in the GLM. With cases of statistically significant difference (Tab. 2) the means were tested by Duncan's test. The differences in nutrient uptake (mainly in plant metabolites) were statistically nonsignificant during winter months (Tab. 3, Fig. 1). The choice of food is strongly restricted and seasonal dynamics unify the quality of available food for all herbivorous species
