Body measures of the brown bear in the West-Carpathians
1994
Hell, P. (Lesnicky Vyskumny Ustav, Zvolen (Slovakia)) | Sladek, J.
Body measurements of 307 male and 291 female bears were evaluated, including 130 male and 58 female bears of known age (established by counting annuli in the tooth cement) for the study of the growth of body proportions. Skull measurements were available for 86 male and 30 female bears and were compared with body measurements. Mean body measurements of 10 year old and older males and females are given in Tab. 1. Growth regression curves of body measurements are shown in Fig. 1, 5 and 7, regression curves of relations between body measurements in Fig. 2, 3 and 6, and regression curves of relations between selected body and skull measurements in Fig. 4, 8 and 9. In size, West-Carpathians bears belong to medium and smaller forms of the species Ursus arctos, though there is a lack of comparable data in the literature. A very close dependence was confirmed between the width of forepaw and the length of the hind leg on the one hand, and the body and skull measurements on the other hand. This enables the researcher to differentiate individuals and estimate size and age by the tracks, a very important tool for the practical conservation of the species and for game management
