A communication infrastructure for networking in the R and D academic community in Slovakia is presented. A short historical overview of important milestones is followed by a description of the present situation. Available networks, which offer worldwide connectivity and various services, are evaluated from the user point of view. The main concern is devoted to the problems that the network users and network providers are faced with at present.
