A fungal extract prepared from Botrytis cinerea L. was tested for its possible effect on membrane potential of poppy callus cells. Although comparably low, the membrane potential of poppy callus cells was shown to consist of two components (active and passive). In general the presence of the fungal extract caused significant depolarization of membrane potential monitored by internal microelectrodes. It was further shown that the fungal extract not only affects the active component of the membrane potential but also the passive one, especially at higher concentrations. However, with these results alone it is not possible to relate unambiguously the membrane potential changes to an effect of elicitation.
