The protein content and size of the aleuronic layer of nine wild wheat species were analysed. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.822, P more than 0.05) between protein content (calculated based on grain weight) and length of aleuronic layer lobes under the region of the abdominal crack was found. Widths of the collateral aleuronic layer of grains hardly differed, though the widest aleuronic layer was found in species without lobes under the abdominal crack. There was a slight positive correlation between the width of the aleuronic layer and protein content. Use of wild species of wheat with long aleuronic layer lobes and normally developed endosperm (Triticum monococcum, Triticum timopheevi) as genetic resources of higher protein content is recommended
