The influence of Ekofert (modified lignite) on the physical and microbiological properties of soil was analysed. Ekofert was shown to influence the water retaining capacity expressed by the maximum capillary moisture capacity, which value increased by 10 %. Negatively influenced were density, porosity and minimum aeration. However, the range of changes were within the optimum limit (values) for field plant cultivation. Among the positives of Ekofert belong the decrease of soil nitrification. Ammonia activity and the number of ammonia bacteria decreased as well after the applying of 5 and 10 tons of Ekofert per hectare. Repeatedly, an increase of ammonification appeared after the applying of 20 tons of Ekofert. No influence on the number of micromyceta and cellulolythic bacteria was recorded, nor was the speed of decomposition of cellulose affected by Ekofert
