Element content of the lichen Hypogymnia physodes and spruce needles in the industrial area of Rudnany and Krompachy (NE Slovakia)

Concentration of Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Mn were measured in samples of the epiphytic lichens Hypogymnia physodes and in spruce needles at 12 sites around the smelters in Rudnany and Krompachy. Content of all elements, with the exception of Mn and As, was generally higher in H. physodes than in spruce needles. Concentration of Hg in plant materials (measured in lichens in Slovakia for the first time) is relatively high and indicates a serious impact of this harmful substance in wide surroundings
