Level of plasmatic progesterone and quality of goat embryos recovered after superovulation

The level of plasmatic progesterone P4 is used to monitor the stages of oestrus cycle, pregnancy failure and early embryonal mortality in goats. The quality of goat embryos was evaluated in dependence on the P4 level during oestrus and on the day of flushing. The RIA method was used to determine the level of plasmatic progesterone. High quality embryos were recovered from 10 animals, i.e. 43 % (Group A) from the total number of 23 hormonally stimulated Saanen white hornless goats at the age of 2-3 years. A high superovulation response was noticed. It was expressed in the number of yellow bodies (lutheum) (14.50 plus or minus 2.48 CL) with a gain of 10.40 plus or minus 1.68 embryos per donor. The level of plasmatic progesterone in blood serum of goats rose significantly (P less than 0.001) from 0.28 plus or minus 0.06 ng per ml on the day of oestrus to 10.64 plus or minus 4.25 ng per ml on the day of flushing. Goats in which ovulation did not take place or the ovulation response was very low (2.69 plus or minus 1.01 CL) were in the second group (group B). There were 13 goats i.e. 57 % of the animals in this group. Only unfertilized oocytes, 2.64 plus or minus 0.47 per one goat on average were produced. The level of plasmatic progesterone decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) from 2.68 plus or minus 0.57 ng per ml on the day of oestrus to 0.46 plus or minus 0.11 ng per ml on the day of embryo recovery. The results show that the level of plasmatic progesterone can be used as a diagnostic method for prognostic determination of the number and quality of embryos.
