Level of plasmatic progesterone in course of gonadotropic treatment in goats in relation to oestrus occurrence

Concentration of plasmatic progesterone (P4) in blood plasma and milk is a suitable indicator of the presence of functional luteal tissue in many animal species including goats. RIA methods are used to monitor the oestrous cycle and also as the test of early pregnancy. 12 short-haired hornless goats were stimulated for embryo recovery. Blood was sampled during the hormonal treatment to determine the level of plasmatic progesterone (P4) as follows: day 0 (insertion of vaginal tampons), day 12 (beginning of PSH administration), day 16 (oestrus - mating), and day 22 (embryo recovery). Results showed that it is possible to divide the animals into 2 groups: In group A (7 animals) a low level of P4 (0.322 ng/ml) was observed in the period of oestrus. Its level rose up to 14.074 ng/ml during the period of flushing (i.e. on the 6th day after mating). High superovulation response was noticed in this group (17.571 CL) as well as high number of recovered embryos (12.428). In the second response group (B, 5 animals) a rise of P4 level to 5.046 ng/ml was observed during the supposed oestrus. However, its level decreased markedly (0.774 ng/ml) during the period of embryos recovery. The result was that 4 animals in this group did not ovulate, and only a slight response was observed in one animal (2 CL). It is possible to use the determination of the level of plasmatic progesterone during the hormonal treatment as an indicator of ovulation and fertilization.
