In the north of Suriname we find the estuarine coastal area which is characterised by a high biological productivity. Being aware of the importance of the Suriname coastal area, a study was made of the sustainable use of the Surinamese estuarine zone. This paper focuses on the flora and fauna of this area and the sustainable use of this zone for agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries, forestry, tourism and recreation and oil-winning. Furthermore it deals with the threats of these activities for the biodiversity. It also gives recommendations for the establishment of the Multiple-use Management Area Estuarine Zone
