Specific objective of this study is to analyze factors affecting credit use of households in Changwat Buri Ram. The data used are obtained from a survey of 129 farmers during crop year 1990/91. Fifty-Seven farms are borrowers and 72 farms are non-borrowers. Correlation analysis, multiple regression and discriminant analysis are employed in the analysis. With regard to the use of credit, it was found that 52.97 % of the total credit were used for production while the rest were for consumption. Most credit are for short-term. Non-institutional sources of credit constitute about 52.63 percent of the total farm credit compared to 43.37 percent from institutional sources. The results of the correlation analysis indicate that outstanding debt, farm assets and consumption expenses are significantly correlated with farm credit. Credit use are net farm income, consumption expenses, outstanding debt and farm assets were found to affect the use of credit. Finally, the results of the discriminant analysis which was applied to evaluate the characteristics which differentiated non-borrowers from borrowers of agricultural credit indicated that planted area and outstanding debt were the major factors. Since many farmers depend on credit from non-institutional lenders which is very costly, it is recommended that institutional lenders especially the BAAC and agricultural cooperatives should attempt to increase their lending for production particularly to small farmers so that they can reduce their cost of production and raise their farm income.
