Cattle production in Paraguay, South America

Cattle occupies about ninety percent of livestock raised in Paraguay, and cattle production is the biggest industry (one third of all production) in Paraguay. Relative to population, cattle stocks are six times and beef production is four times the world average. Allowing for exports, domestic beef consumption is very high relative to incomes in Paraguay. The extensive grazing lands of Paraguay (S. America) that have an output equal to the world's average, are held, for the most part, individually, in large holdings, or Latifundia (Estancia's area : 2,000 HA-100,000 HA). The stratification of the grassland-based beef industries in LATIFUNDIA seems to be the present subject to overcome the great seasonal variations in carrying capacity of the grasslands of Paraguay. Beef production of S. America seems to be the highest in developing regions, 1980-2000 (FAO expectation). Increased output is now expected under the Japanese Technical Cooperation for the cattle reproduction improvement project carried out 1982-1989 in Paraguay through breed improvement by A.I. and E.T. and animal health and nutrition (1986-87 Team Leader: Prof. Dr. T. KASHIWABARA)
