Supplementation of some natural pigments in broiler and layer rations

Effects were studied on the supplementation of marigold petal meal (MPM) or marigold petal meal extracts (MPME) in various levels of leucaena leaves, corn and broken rice feed to the colour of egg yolk, shank and beak of broiler and layer. The study was devided into three experiments using completely randomized design. There was no significant difference in feed consumption, egg production and egg weight of layer feeded with MPM and MPME supplemented ration. Improvement of egg yolk colour was found in layers feeded with mixed-leucaena leaves diet as well as MPM supplemented diet. In corn meal-reduced diet, supplementation of MPME 0.014 % or MPM 1 % to broiler feed in last two weeks was sufficient in colour improvement of shank and beak. Highest efficiency in weight gain and feed conversion of broiler feeded with water-soaked leucaena leaves meal (WSLM) was limited at 5 % level. However, layer feed supplemented with MPME as low as 0.012 % could yield a relative better egg yolk colour improvement than those supplemented with 1 % MPM or 10 % WSLM.
