Effects of lysine and energy levels on performances of crossbred and hybrid pigs (2) carcass characteristics

Two fattening groups of barrows, 20 three-way crossbreds and 18 hybrids were equally divided into two groups of 10 and 9 respectively to receive two types of ration, low lysine-high energy and high lysine-low energy diets. The low lysine-high energy diet provided 0.74 and 0.69 % lysine, 3,200 kcal ME/kg and the high lysine-low energy diet provided 1.19 and 0.91 % lysine, 2,950 kcal ME/kg for growing (30-60 kg) and finishing (60-100 kg) periods respectively. Carcasses were evaluated when pigs reached 103.46+-2.55 kg. Least squares analysis of unequal subclass data was performed and mean comparisons were tested using Student's t-test. Significant differences (P0.05) were found in tenderloin of the two breed groups and in fat content of pigs fed two types of diets indicating breed group and ration effects in these two carcass traits. Interactions were found in tenderloin and lean content. Tenderloin weight from three-way crossbreds fed high lysine-low energy diet was heavier (P0.05) than from those of the same breed group fed low lysine-high energy diet and from hydrids fed two different rations. Also lean content from three-way crossbreds fed high lysine-low energy diet was higher than from hybrids fed low lysine high energy diet (P0.05).
