Relationships between food habits of adolescent mothers in Songkhla Province Hospitals and birth weight of their infants

Objectives of this research were to study the relationships between 1) socio-economic aspects, nutrition knowledge and food habits of adolescent mothers 2) food habits of adolescent mothers and birth weight of infants 3) maternal weight gain during gestation period of adolescent mothers and birth weight of infants. The subjects understudy consisted of 55 adolescent mothers (less than 18 years of age) who attended the antenatal care unit at Songkhla province hospitals. The sampling method were purposive sampling. The data were collected using interview questionaires and statistical analyzed by percentage and Chi-square. The result of this research were as follow: 1) Socio-economic aspects namely family income, education level and beliefs of adolescent mothers, had a positive relationship with food habits of the mothers at 0.05 statistical significant level while nutrition knowledge of the mothers also had a positive relationship with their food habits at 0.01 statistical significant level. However, family size did not have a statistical significant relationship with food habits of the adolescent mothers. 2) Food habits of adolescent mothers had a positive relationship with birth weight of infants at 0.01 statistical significant level. 3) Maternal weight gain during gestation period of adolescent mothers had a positive relationship with birth weight of infants at 0.01 statistical significant level.
