Serological studies of cattle affected by outbreaks of diarrhoeal disease in Kalimantan, Indonesia

Serological surveys using serum neutralization tests to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) virus were conducted between September and November 1989, covering 249 bovine serum samples which were taken from both affected and unaffected areas in both South and West Kalimantan. Differences between the seroprevalences of IBR and BVD were observed between the seroprevalences of IBR and BVD were observed between the two provinces and within each province. In South Kalimantan, 56 of 161 (35 %) of cattle sampled were BVD reactors, with titres ranging from 1:2 to 1:32. There was a marked difference between affected and unaffected areas, 41 % (53/128) and 9 % (3/33) respectively. Only 17 % (22/161) reacted to IBR with titres ranging from 1:2 to 1:64 and with no differences between affected and unaffected areas. In contrast, in West Kalimantan, 67 out of 72 cattle (93 %) from affected areas were IBR reactors with titres ranging from 1:2 to 1:512, while only 6 % (1/16) from unaffected areas reacted to IBR and with a low titre (1:8). Only 9 % (6/66) from unaffected areas reacted to IBR and with a low titre (1:8). Only 9 % (6/66) reacted to BVD in affected areas but none in unaffected areas. In West Kalimantan not only did affected cattle have a high seroprevalence to IBR, but histopathological examination of tissues showed lesions consistent with IBR. Hence IBR was suspected of being involved as a cause of disease. In South Kalimantan, where different clinico-pathological changes were observed, the serological data could suggest an involvement of BVD, although further testing for other disease agents should also be considered.
