Congenital anomalies of newborn calves associated with vitamin A deficiency

A series of congenital anomalies of Japanese black newborn calves from cows kept by vitamin A deficiency diet happened to be obtained in a farm at Miyazaki prefecture, southern part of Japan. Thirteen of 28 which were obtained during 16 months from April 1986 to July 1987 had some congenital anomalies by degree at birth and the average of gestation period of them was shortened to be 269.5 days. Of 13 abnormalities, 8 cases shown similar clinical signs each other at birth, which were inability to stand, difficulty to suck without assistance, opithotonus and domed cranial bone. Four were clinically blindness. Two of them which were carefully not confirmed, although it did not react to almost stimulation for eye. In 11 of 13 soon, some died after birth and others with no good prognosis were euthanized. Five newborn calves with no good prognosis were necropsied. Much fat deposition in peritoneal cavity (3/5), congestion of mucosa of intestine (4/5), hyperemia of brain and hydrocephaly showing dilation of lateral ventricle (5/5) were grossly recognized. Microscopically, livers were characterized by lipidosis of liver cells by the staining of Sudan III and some lobules of pancreas were replaced by invasive fat. Few Vitamin A were detected in all sera from 4 of the 6 as compared with control serum. Lower volume of cholesterol was also contained in the 4 sera. These could be rare case that the vitamin A deficiency in cattle was found by congenital anomalies of newborn calves.
