Dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons in seawater along the eastern coastal areas from Pattaya to Trat

Dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons in seawater samples (1 m depth) collected from the coastal areas of Pattaya to Trat in December 1987 and April 1988 were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy. Forty sampling stations were selected along the coastline to represent beneficial uses of the coastal resources such as recreation beaches, aquaculture and fishing ports. These were compared with 20 sampling stations both nearshore (1-20 km) and offshore (50 km). Results indicated that onshore waters were more polluted by dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons than nearshore and offshore waters. However, the values being reported in this study are normal ranges in comparison with other works. Fishing ports were generally more contaminated than recreation beaches and aquaculture sites. It appeared that the degree of contamination of the coastal onshore waters increased from Chanthaburi, Trat, Chon Buri (Pattaya) and Rayong. The differences in dissolved hydrocarbons concentrations between the two seasons were non singificant.
