Benthic macrofauna in Rayong bay
1988
Joompol Sanguansin (Eastern Marine Fisheries Developement Center, Rayong (Thailand))
Density, biomass and distribution of the benthic macrofauna were studied at Rayong Bay. Sampling by grab (Smith-McIntyre) and dredge at eleven stations were investigated during Febuary 1986 to April 1987. Salinity, temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen and depth were measured. Soil composition and total organic content of the sediments were also determined. The benthic macrofauna collected by grab had average density of 191.99 individuals/square m and average biomass of 85.745 gm/square m. Polychaetes were the most abundant, followed by amphioxus and crustaceans. Molluscs, echinoderms, fishes, nemerteans, echiurans, sipunculids, oligochaetes and coelenterate were also recorded. The benthic macrofauna collected by dredge had average density of 8.45 individuals/100 square m and average biomass of 63.773 gm/100 square m. Echinoderms were the most abundant, followed by molluscs and amphioxus. Crustaceans, polychaetes, fishes, echiurans, sipunculids, nemerteans, brachiopods and coelenterate were also recorded. The benthic macrofauna was found most concentrated in shallow areas. The correlation of the benthic macrofauna to some important environmental factors was studied.
