The effect of nitrogen on yields and grain protein content in winter forage barley (Hordeum vulgare spp. vulgare)

The subject of the 17-years long study was the effect of nitrogen (N) on the grain yield and protein content. The experiments were conducted on a chernozem soil of high potential fertility. The results of the study led to the following conclusions. The yields of winter forage barley depended less on the N rate applied than on conditions in a particular year. Since the content of nitrate N at the depth of 0-90 cm varied considerably on a yearly basis, it approximated 100 kg/ha, the optimum amount of fertilizer N should be determined with exactness. N affected the grain protein content, which increased as the rate of N applied was augmented, up to the rate of 120 kg/ha. The grain yields increased up to the rate of 30 kg/ha, whereas the protein yields increased up to the rate twice as high (60 kg/ha).
