Effect of production method on growth dynamics, yield and quality of celery

It was studied the effect of six production methods (direct sowing, transplants with bare roots and bagged transplants on normal and covered soil) on the growth dynamics, yield and quality of celery. The results indicated that the growth and development of celery included five characteristic periods regardless of the production method applied. Production method affected considerably the growth dynamics as well as the yield and quality of celery. The bagged transplants had the most intensive growth (4.6 g/day/plant), the directly sown seeds the least intensive (4.0 g/day/plant). The bagged transplants produced the highest yields of leaves and roots, 31.0 t/ha (10.9 more than the directly sown seeds) and 38.8 t/ha (16.4 more than the directly sown seeds), respectively. The highest content of dry matter in the root was registered with the direct sowing on covered soil (15.11), the lowest with the bagged transplants (14.15).
