Effect of fertilization with selenium on increase of its content in nettle plants (Urtica dioica L.)

In the present work, we tested the effect of fertilization with selenium (Na2SeO4) during growth of nettle plants on increase of its content in aboveground parts of the plant. Doses of 50, 500 and 1000 g Se/ha were used in the framework of field experiments on dark swamp soil in Pancevo (Yugoslavia). It is established that even the smallest dose of selenium (50 g/ha) causes its significant accumulation in the aboveground parts of nettle (first harvest). The influence of larger doses was even more pronounced, so that even as much as 95 ppm Se was found at the largest dose (1000 g/ha). Reduced action of selenium was found during the following year, but only for the two larger fertilizer doses, in addition to which considerable losses (about 70) due to leaching were ascertained. Alcohol extracts of nettle had a high level of selenium (2.5 microgram/ml), and extraction of Se with hot water was even more effective (10-20).
