A long-term stationary trial was used to monitor the effect of fertilization with NPK nutrients on root yields and sugar yields in sugar beet. Soil mineral nitrogen was monitored for three years at 20 locations. Analysis of the effect climatic factors have on yields involved the period 1971 - 1992. The study indicates that excess phosphorus and potassium decrease root and sugar yields in sugar beet (from 2.4 to 4.2 t/ha concerning from 70 to 1330 kg/ha). The amount and distribution of mineral nitrogen down the soil profile can be used in order to make a fertilization plan for each plot individually. Winter precipitation and the distribution of mineral nitrogen can serve as the basis for the correction of projected yields. Yield correction may range from 15 to 35.
