Chlorophyll content as an indicator of sugar beet provision with nitrogen

Water culture was used to examine the effect of various nitrogen concentrations (from 0.125 to 0.625 mM) on the dry matter mass of the above-ground part and the root, leaf area, chloroplast pigment content (chlorophyll a+b), leaf form, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, nitrate-reductase activity, and nitrogen content in the sugar beet hybrid variety Hy-11. Increases of nitrogen concentration in the nutritive solution tended to bring increases in the dry matter mass of the above-ground part and the root, leaf area, chloroplast pigment content, nitrate-reductase activity, and nitrogen content in leaves. There existed high positive correlations between chlorophyll content (a+b) on one side and the other indicators, except leaf area ratio and specific leaf area, on the other. This is an indication that chlorophyll content may be used as an indicator of nitrogen status of young sugar beet plants.
