Investigation of osmoregulation as a factor of drought resistance in maize. [A short version of master thesis]

Osmoregulation as an adaptive mechanism of drought resistance was studied in 4 inbred lines which differ in maturity grouping and drought resistance. Effect of drought was studied under controlled and field conditions. In controlled environment, plants were grown to 4-leaf stage and exposed to drought for 7 days. Leaf and root samples were taken for analysis of cations: K+, Ca+, Mg2+ and sugars. Estimations of total water potential and relative water content were done from the leaves. Measurements of the same parameters, proline content and some morpho-anatomical traits of lines were done under irrigated and rainfall conditions in the field-grown plants. Results point out that both under controlled and field conditions osmotic adjustment took place in drought resistant lines mostly at the expense of ion and sugar accumulation under moderate stress. Under severe stress this mechanism is insufficient for turgor maintenance.
