Some chemical and physical factors associated with copper and zinc status and availability in Zimbabwean soils

The distribution of copper and zinc in Zimbabwean soils was studied using a total of 120 profiles taken from 22 different locations. EDTA extractable copper (EDTA-Cu) was found to range between 0.31 and 26.84 ppm while HCI extractable zinc (HCI-Zn) ranged from 0.47 to 6.88 ppm. Soils derived from granite parent materials had less available copper and zinc than soils from other parent materials. About 20 per cent of the soils studied were deficient in EDTA-Cu. If cropped intensively, about 32 per cent of the soils had the potential for zinc deficiency. Total copper content averaged 9.88 ppm with a range of 2.18 to 36.38 ppm. Granite derived soils generally had lower total copper content than other soils. The average total zinc status was 8 ppm and the range was 3.7 to 16.3 ppm
