Herbicide dosage reduction: the case of clethodim

Clethodim is a new systemic herbicide selective towards broadleaf crops and effective against annual and perennial grasses. The research in 1994 and 1995 on soybean was aimed at studying the possibility of reducing the regular dosage (600 g per ha formulated product) of this graminicide by means of adjuvants, application methods and mixtures with other herbicides. In the experiment on adjuvants and application methods clethodim was applied at 600 and 400 g per ha, with and without foliar fertilizer or non-ionic wetting agent or mineral oil, all used with fan or hollow cone nozzles at 150, 300 and 450 litres of water. In the experiment on synergical activity the treatment with straight clethodim at regular rate was compared with the ones with the product at 200 g per ha in addition to fluazifop-P-butyl at 675 g per ha or haloxyfop-ethoxyethyl at 417 g per ha. In all experiments, the main weed was Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. While foliar fertilizer didn't improve the efficacy of clethodim, mineral oil and non-ionic wetting agent allowed the rate of application to be reduced by 1/3 without affecting the herbicide effectiveness. These adjuvants clearly limited the influence of nozzle type or water volume.
