Inland navigation improvement in the developing countries: the training centre of Palembang, an example of transfer of technology through education

The paper is first concerned with a diagnosis of the specific problems encountered in general in the inland navigation and ferries management and technics; based on this analysis, the most important problems to be solved in developing countries are pointed out. The best way to improve the existing situation in these countries is first to increase knowledge through education. The first analysis is thus important to define the education methodology and contents. The paper will then develop the methodology of the training programme and the corresponding training centre implementation. All these considerations will be applied at an existing case: Indonesia and its Training Centre for Inland Navigation and Ferries located in Palembang (Sumatra) which is now in charge of short- and long-term training programmes
