Effects of tebufenozide on oocyte growth in Plodia interpunctella

The insecticidal non-steroidal ecdysone agonist tebufenozide (RH-5992) was applied to Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella adults, determining its effects on egg development. Tebufenozide was applied in acetone to the thoracic dorsum at 1 mg/adult. The number of mature, chorionated eggs in the ovaries was determined after a 2 and 4 day-period. Topical treatment resulted in mortality, and treated females had smaller ovaries with fewer chorionated eggs as compared with controls. After 4-6 days, 100 per cent of adults was dead, and dissection showed degeneration of their ovaries. In another series, treated and control females were dissected after 2 days of treatment, and ovaries prepared for electron microscopic analysis.
