Variation of pesticide use among farmers in Drenthe: a starting point for environmental protection

From various studies in the Netherlands it appears that a large variation in pesticide use exists between farmers. This variation has been taken as a starting point to reduce pesticide risk for the environment. As a case study a number of farmers has been interviewed in the province of Drenthe, in The Netherlands, in two areas: one on sandy soils and one on reclaimed peatland. Farmers were asked about their pesticide use in potatoes, sugar beet and cereals (dose, frequency, way of application, etc.). Using an environmental "yardstick", the risks for aquatic and terrestrial non-target species were calculated. Moreover, the farmers were asked about their motivation as to their choice and use. Based on these data, a strategy for reducing environmental damage can he developed.
