The effectiveness of 19 acaricides for the control of the strawberry mite, Tarsonemus pallidus Banks, is described. A summary of semi-field and field tests executed during 9 years is given. All compounds that belong to the acaricidal insect growth regulators or ovolarvicidal acaricides were ineffective. The results of mitochondrial electron transport inhibitors and of chloorfenapyr are not consistent. Organotin compounds and bromopropylate have a moderate effect. Azadirachtine, diafenthuron, bifenthrin and brofenprox failed to control this pest. Only abamectin was shown to be a possible alternative for the use of the chlorinated hydrocarbons dicofol and endosulfan. The limited number of substances, which are sufficiently active on T. pallidus, handicaps the onset of practicable anti-resistance strategies.
