[Phenotypic variability and genotypic conditionality of slaughter characteristics of Black-and-White cattle]

Three main genotypic groups of Black-and-White steers were found to have significant differences in carcass quality characteristics. Sons by sires of Byelorussian and West European selection had higher total meat yield, index of meatiness and meat yield per 100 kg of live weight by 1.5 and 5.5 per cent respectively as compared with Holstein steers. There were significant differences between steers in every genetic group by slaughter characteristics reaching 10-21, 2.5-3.9, 11-15, 16-18 and 10-11 per cent in carcass weight, meat and bone yield, index of meatiness and yield per 100 kg of live weight respectively. Significant differences were also observed between groups of half-sibs in variability of these traits. Coefficients of heritability were found to be medium for carcass weight and meat yield (h2 = 0.42-0.56) and high for meat and bone weight and carcass bone yield (h2 = 0.61-0.78)
