Mite fauna of stored grain in the Czech Republic

Faunistic research was done in 64 different grain stores in the Czech Republic during 1996. One hundred and twelve samples of wheat, 74 samples of barley and 70 samples of sweepings were examined. 32 species of mites were found (15 species of the order Astigmata, 10 species of the order Prostigmata and 7 species of the order Mesostigmata). Barley was more infested by mites than wheat. Over 90% of the samples of sweepings were infested, which means that sweepings are a source of infestation and the place where mites can survive when the stores are empty. The dominant acaroid mites were Lepidoglyphus destructor and Acarus siro, the predatory mite Cheyletus eruditus and the mouldfeeder Tydeus interruptus. From the composition of species found we assume that grain stored 30 and 20 years ago had a higher moisture content and less dashes than the grain stored in 1996.
