The preservation of a crushed moist mixed crop
1997
Sarand, R.J. | Kiisk, T. | Jaaniste, I.
The ensiling of a crushed moist mixed crop in small containers in the ensiling laboratory of the Estonian Research Institute of Agriculture was studied during two years. The mixed crop included barley, oats and pea. The ensiling additives Siloben and Superben, which contain benzoic acid compounds, experimental additive AIV-10X and inoculants of lactic acid and propionic acid bacteria were used. From the opened containers the samples were taken for chemical and microbiological analyses and the determination of stability. The crushed mixed crop with optimum humidity, was preserved well enough under farm and laboratory conditions. With reduction in the requirements for humidity the ensiling process was worsened. The use of additives ensured a decrease in gaseous losses and in most cases the improvement in hygienical quality. The additives - Superben and Siloben worked out in the Microbiological Laboratory, were the best to assure the feed's high aerobic quality
