Soil problems are localised and in most cases obscured. Farming situations among Ghanaian farmers also vary. Farmers need to have some basic scientific knowledge about the soil that can be used to manage topsoils and reclaim degraded soils. Farmers need to understand the scientific principles behind some of their indigenous knowledge on soils in order to improve upon their soil management activities. The paper explains the importance of the soil system in relation to the farming system. Simple methods of managing some types of soils are provided
