An important part of the measures taken for the harmonic optimum in the productivity of soil and plants will be a nutrient supply also in the future. The research work having been carried out since 1962 at the Institute of the authors proves the complicated system of soil-plant relationship which includes from both plant and soil respects important changes valid for short- and long-terms. Comparative test of monoculture and forecrop also points at the importance of forecrop from the side of water management, if in 4-rotation, with a winter wheat forecrop the correlation of nutrient - precipitation - yield, and within that the correlation of precipitation - yield is less close. The results may serve to obtain a clear picture about the water demand of maize and the extent to which the nutrient may influence the water utilization. These results may support to develop the Hungarian varietal strucutre under our conditions of poor precipitation for maize production
