Papp, J. (Univ. of Hort. and Food Ind., Budapest (Hungary))
Apple in Eastern Europe is a dominant fruit crop. In the majority of the countries the weather is extreme, with dry summers and severe winters. Apple crop in the region suffered a marked decrease in the 90's. In new apple orchards M 9 and M 26 rootstocks and Idared variety have become popular. The percentage of dense orchards is not considerable yet. The age of most apple orchards is too old. The apple production will remain in the stage of stagnation until 2000
